The Defense Ministry is under fire after allegedly trying to cover up how a Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer crashed into a small fishing boat.
The Atago, which was equipped with the Aegis radar system, hit the fishing boat Feb. 19, leaving two fishermen — a father and son — missing.
Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba questioned the Atago's duty officer before the official probe started. Initially, the ministry lied to the Coast Guard about questioning the officer. (AP, Kyodo News)
