Salmonella-tainted tomatoes sicken 167

At least 167 people have been infected with salmonella from tainted tomatoes in 17 U.S. states, officials said June 11.
At least 23 people have been hospitalized for infection by Salmonella Saintpaul, a rare strain of the potentially fatal bacteria. Its source can be traced to raw red tomatoes.
The scare has forced supermarkets, restaurants and fast-food chains, including McDonald's, to pull tomatoes from their shelves and out of their sandwiches and salads.
Tomato growers warned the industry was "in complete collapse." (AP)
