Vol. 19 : Getting in shape

Emma: Hey! (1) Look at you! (2) How've you been?

Takuro: Hey. Been good, thanks.

Emma: (3) Great to see you back. So, it's been. . .what, two years, (4) since you left for the States? How's it feel to be back in Japan?

Takuro: Well, I guess we have a new administration. . . Yeah, (5) things look pretty different from two years ago.

Emma: (6) Speaking of differences . . . Looks like you've lost weight. Before you left I was assuming all the junk food you'd eat over there would make you fat.

Takuro: Hey, you noticed. Actually, (7) I quit smoking.

Emma: You did? How? I mean, (8) before you used to smoke, like, two packs a day. Unbelievable. Good for you.

Takuro: Thanks. I wish now that I'd done that earlier. Feels great.

Emma: But they usually say that people gain weight (9) after they stop smoking.

Takuro: Right. (10) And I did. Right after I quit, everything tasted delicious and just like that, I was up 7 kilos. So after about three months I started running.

Emma: I see. So that's how you lost weight.

Takuro: Yep. (11) No pain, no gain. I was so into running that two weeks before I left I even ran in the local marathon.

Emma: I'm impressed. Maybe I should start running too.

Takuro: Yeah, you should. You'd definitely slim down.

Emma: . . . Wait. You're trying to say that I'm overweight?

Takuro: No, no, no. (12) Of course not. Not at all. Um, what I meant was . . . ur. . ..
