Shallow rivers can be rough and loud as they run quickly over rocks and rapids. Deep rivers, however, are more still and calm, and the calm surface can hide powerful currents and unsuspected depth (deep rivers do not look deep). It is the same with people. People are quiet and calm on the outside can hide a deeper, more complicated, possibly stronger personality.
