You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear

This proverb sounds obvious. You can't make an expensive silk purse using just the ear of a female pig. This proverb means that you can't turn something that isn't very good into something that's excellent. It can sometimes be used to refer to people, for example, training an idiot to become a highly intelligent person.
