He was also a greedy lion, and he killed any animal he came across. (昔々、ある森に、凶暴なライオンがいたそうな。そのライオンはとても食いしん坊で、出合った動物という動物をすべて餌食にしていった。)    なんだと？ライオンは怒った・・・ One day, all the animals of the forest gathered together and approached the lion. They offered him one animal of each species each day so that he would not kill so much and so indiscriminately. The lion agreed. (ある日のこと、森の動物たちは全員集まって、ライオンのところへ向かっていった。 そして毎日一匹ずつ自分たちの中からいけにえを捧げるから、 そうむやみやたらに殺さないでくれと、ライオンに懇願した。ライオンは承知した。) Every day after that, each species would take turns to offer the lion one of their kind, and in the end came the rabbits' turn. The rabbits chose an old and wise rabbit for the lion, and he set off alone. The old and wise rabbit took his sweet time to get to the lion, and the lion became impatient and swore that he would kill all the animals the following day. (それ以降、毎日ある種の動物から一匹ずついけにえを捧げていた。そしてある日、ウサギの番がやってきた。 うさぎたちは、年寄りで賢いウサぎ-ここでは「賢いじいさんウサギ」と呼ぼう-を選んで、一人でライオンの元へと送った。 賢いじいさんウサギがなかなか来ないので、ライオンはイライラしてきてこう言った。 「いいか、明日お前たちの仲間を全員食べてしまうからな！」) When the rabbit finally arrived at the lion's den, it was sunset and the lion was very angry. But the wise rabbit was calm, and he explained to the lion that it was not his fault that he was late: ( 賢いじいさんウサギがやっとライオンのすみかに来たのは、もう日が落ちたころだったので、 ライオンは怒り狂ったこと狂ったこと。でも、賢いじいさんウサギは落ち着いていた。 そして、遅れたのは自分のせいではないと、遅れた理由を説明し始めたのだ。) The rabbit said he had been on his way to the lion with a group of other rabbits, when another lion had attacked them, killing all the rabbits except him. He said this other lion was challenging the lion's rule. (話によると、ここに来る途中で、ある一匹のライオンに出合い、仲間のウサギたちが全員襲われて、 しまいに残りは自分だけになってしまったということだった。 そして、「ある一匹のライオン」は、このライオンの支配に対して挑戦状をたたきつけているのだという。) Naturally, the lion was enraged and he asked the rabbit to take him to this other lion. (当然ながら、ライオンは激怒し、そのある一匹のライオンとやらを連れて来い！と命令した。) The wise rabbit agreed and he led the lion to a deep well. The rabbit pointed down the well and told the lion that the other lion was in there. The lion looked in the well and saw his own reflection, but he didn't realize it was his own reflection and he thought it was the other lion. (賢いじいさんウサギはうなずき、底の深い井戸までライオンを連れて行った。そして井戸を指差して「そのライオンは、この中にいます」 と言った。ライオンは井戸をのぞきこみ、自分の姿が見えたのだが、ラ イオンはそれを自分だとは思わず、ある一匹のライオンだと思い込んだ。) The lion started to growl, and naturally, his reflection growled back at him. The lion became so angry that he leaped at his reflection, and so fell down the well and drowned. (のぞきこんだライオンがほえると、そいつもほえた。 ライオンはいよいよ怒り、井戸の中のライオン-つまり自分自身-に向かって、 今度は飛びかかっていった。そして最後にはおぼれて死んでしまった。) Thus the rabbit saved the animals of the forest from the proud lion. (こうして賢いじいさんウサギは、高慢なライオンからほかの動物たちを守ることができたとさ。めでたしめでたし。)
