Many children, whether they like it or not, eventually become like their parents. Traditionally, the son becomes like the father, and the daughter becomes like the mother. This proverb is used when father and son behave in the same way. Maybe, they both enjoy gambling, or maybe, they are both kind people. In these cases, you can say, "Like father, like son." In the case of mothers and daughters, you can say "like mother, like daughter" and, although it is not so common, you can say "like father, like daughter" or "like mother, like son."
