Touch pitch and be defiled

"Pitch" is a black substance, like the stuff that roads are made from. If you touch it, it will stick to you. It will turn your hands black as well. Black is often associated with evil, and the proverb means that if you meet bad people and if you keep contact with bad people, you will become a bad person too.
