Ac-cording to international data compiled in the World Top Incomes Database, the total income share of the top 1 percent of U.S. income earners rose from 8 percent in 1980 to 17 percent in 2005. During the same time, the income share of the top 1 percent in Japan rose much less, from 7 percent to 9 percent.
