上の娘（12歳）は、ピアノが趣味です。ユイチュンはまだ8歳で、趣味というものがありません。だから、ゲームをするのもいいと思います。台湾の子供たちも、日本の子供たちと一緒でゲームが大好き。ゲームばかりするのは考えものですが、勉強の後など、リラックスのためだったら、私はいいと思います。
My elderst daughter (she's 12) loves playing the piano. my second daughter- Yuicyun- is the only eight and she doesn't have a hobby yet. I think playing videogames is OK. Taiwanese kids love videogames as mush as Japanese kids, too. I don't think I'd like it if she played them all the time, but if it's to relax, say, after doing her homework, then I think it's fine.

Well, I didn't get it for Christmas, but I got a horse last year. It's like, the
best present I've ever had in my life.

さすが森の国ドイツ。乗馬人口は日本よりはるかに多く、子供のころから乗馬をする人も多いです。大都会ベルリンなどではともかく、郊外へ行くと、乗馬をする人の姿がよく見られます。
A horse? For a kid? Trust the Germans. There are many more people who ride horses in Germany than in Japan. Not in the main cities, but if you go even just a little bit out in the suburbs, it's not uncommon to see people riding horses.

my birthday.

お年玉について台湾のユイチュンちゃんのお母さんとお話をしていたときのこと——。
Incidentally, I was talking with Yuicyun's mum about otoshidama, and she said something interesting:
お母さん「日本ではお年玉の封筒の色は何色なの？」
"What's color envelop do people use when giving otoshidama?"
私「え？決まってないなぁ。ピンクだったり、青だったり、白だったり・・・。ドラえもんとかキティちゃんのキャラクターが描いてある封筒もあるよ」
"Well, it depends," I said. " it could be pink, blue or white. Some even have Doraemon or Hello Kitty designs."
お母さん「台湾のお年玉の封筒は、赤って決まってるのよ。それに、子供だけじゃなくて
私は親にも配らなきゃいけないの。」
"In Taiwan,"she said, "The envelop should be red, and you don't give it only to children, you should give money to your parents as well."
私「自分の親にも？」
"What?" I said, incredulous. "Otoshidama to your parents?"
お母さん「そう。だって親は年寄りだもの。働いていないじゃない？」
"Yes," she said. "Because they aren't young anymore. They don't work, do they?"
確かに。（でも、日本のおじいちゃん、おばあちゃんだってお年玉が欲しいですよね）
キリスト教的な道徳志向を持つ西欧、儒教的な道徳志向を持つ中華文明圏、イスラム的な
道徳志向を持つイスラム圏、このいずれにもあてはまらないのが日本だ （『韓国は
一個の哲学である』、小倉紀蔵著、講談社刊）という話を思い出しました。
She's right.(I'm sure the elderly in Japan wouldn't mind getting otoshidama.)
It reminds me of something Ogura Kizo wrote in his "Kankoku wa ikko no tetsugaku dearu": Christianity in the West is based on a certain set of moral principles, Confusianism in the East on another, and Islam on another.

I don't know if you've noticed, but it's the first time a Taiwanese kid has appeared on this site.
そう、今年は台湾の小学生英語も特集する予定です。そして、夏にはスイスも予定しています。この2ケ国を初め、2007年もいろいろな世界の小学生に登場してもらいます。
