Last time we looked at ways to guess the meaning of phrasal verbs. Today, we'll look at word order for phrasal verbs.
Many phrasal verbs can take objects. If the phrasal verb is separable, the object can go before or after the preposition/particle. For example:
1. verb + object + preposition/particle
◆ She put a sweater on.
◆ He took the trash out.
2. verb + preposition/particle + object
◆ She put on a sweater.
◆ He took out the trash.
However, when the object is a pronoun, it must go between the verb and the preposition/particle. For example:
◆ Could you please put them away?
× Could you please put away them?
Some phrasal verbs are inseparable. This means that the object can only go after the preposition/particle, even when it is a pronoun. For example:
◆ Let's get on the bus.
× Let's get the bus on.
