Last time, we looked at how we use the when we think someone already knows or understands what we are talking about. Today, let’s look at some other ways we use the in our sentences.
We use the to refer to all of the members of a group or category. This is often used in more formal or academic speaking or writing.
◆ The whale is one of the largest animals in the world. (= whales)
◆ The airplane made it possible for people to travel easily around the world. (= airplanes)
We also use the with some adjectives to refer to groups of people.
◆ The rich should donate some of their money to the poor.
◆ Only the brave should try sky diving.
The is used to talk about common organizations, systems, transportation and services.
◆ If there is a fire, you should call the fire department.
◆ I always watch the news before I go to sleep.
◆ How much does it cost to ride on the subway?
Usually, we don’t use the with names. For example:
◆ I had a meeting with Mr. Jones. (× the Mr. Jones)
◆ Have you ever been to Paris? (× the Paris)
