Mind is an interesting verb that has many uses in conversation. Today, let’s look at some of the meanings of mind on its own.
The most common meaning of mind is “be careful about” or “pay attention to.” We often use this with commands or warnings. For example:
◆ Please mind your head when you get out of the car. (= Be careful not to hit your head)
◆ Mind that you don’t forget your umbrella when you leave. (Be careful not to leave your umbrella)
We use “don’t mind + noun” to mean “don’t pay attention to.”
◆ Don’t mind me. I’m just passing through. (= You don’t need to pay attention to me).
◆Please don’t mind the mess. I will clean it up later. (= Don’t pay attention to the mess).
There are also many idioms that use mind. For example:
◆ Mind your manners. (= Behave politely)
◆ Mind your p’s and q’s. (= Speak and act appropriately)
◆ Mind your own business. (= Don’t get involved in somebody else’s affairs)
Another meaning of mind is “take care of something or someone.”
◆ I’m looking for someone to mind my cat while I’m on vacation.
◆ Can you mind my bag while I go to the restroom?
