A compound noun is a noun that is made from two or more words. Usually, compound nouns are made from:
[noun + noun]
◆ Let’s meet at the train station. (train + station)
◆ I am building a doghouse. (dog + house)
[adjective + noun]
◆ Are there any magnets on the whiteboard? (white + board)
◆ The highway was closed due to an accident. (high + way)
However, there are also compound nouns made with verbs, adjectives and prepositions. For example:
◆ [verb + noun] May I use the copy machine?
◆ [noun + verb] Look at that beautiful sunset!
◆ [verb + preposition] I have a checkup on Monday at 3 p.m.
◆ [noun + adjective] I ate a mouthful of candy.
◆ [noun + prepositional phrase] My mother-in-law gave us a nice wedding gift.
