Last time, we looked at indirect questions for yes/no questions. Today, let’s look at indirect questions for wh- questions.
Indirect questions start with an introductory phrase like “Do you know 〜?” and have the following form:
Do you know + [wh- word] + statement + ?
Direct: Where does he live?
Indirect: Do you know where he lives?
Direct: How long is the flight?
Indirect: Do you know how long the flight is?
Usually, we have to switch the subject and verb in the indirect question (e.g. is the flight → the flight is). However, if the question word is the subject, we don’t have to change the word order. For example:
Direct: Who is using this computer?
Indirect: Do you know who is using this computer?
Just like with yes/no questions, you answer indirect wh- questions the same way you answer direct questions. For example:
A: Do you know what time the museum closes?
B: Yes, it closes at 6 p.m.
or
B: I think it closes at 6 p.m.
