Coordinating conjunctions are used to join words or sentences in English. Today, let’s look at three common coordinating conjunctions: and, or and but.
Let’s look at each one and how we use them.
And is used for words, phrases or sentences that are the same or similar.
◆ I like pizza and pasta.
◆ My wife and I are going to see a movie and have dinner tonight.
◆ Kenji is going to wash the dishes and I’m going to dry them.
In a negative sentence, and can have two different meanings. This depends on whether the speaker stresses the word and.
◆ (No stress) I don’t want to feed the cat and walk the dog. (= I don’t want to do either thing)
◆ (Stress) I don’t want to feed the cat AND walk the dog. (= I will do one of them, but not both.)
Or is used for choices and options.
◆ I want to buy a red car or a blue car.
◆ During winter vacation, we will go skiing or fly to Hawaii.
◆ We are going to remodel our home or we will buy a new one next year.
◆ I’m not going to call him or email him.
